Orphaned at some point due to a vampire attack, Vanitas was taken in by the church and trained to become a Chasseur, one of their vampire hunters, until he was kidnapped by Dr. Moreau to become one of his test subjects. Undergoing traumatic experimentation to try turning him into a vampire, he and another child, Mikhail, were rescued by the Vampire of the Blue Moon, Luna, at the last second. For a time they lived together happily as a family, until Luna's true name was taken, turning Luna into a monster and forcing Vanitas to kill them after he had been bitten and made kin of the Blue Moon clan.
From then on Vanitas swore not only to find who stole Luna's name, but to get revenge on Luna by erasing every trace of them from existence and by healing every vampire of the Crimson Moon he could.
