[ He figured video would be much easier for this, so here he is. There's not even a super big rush or anything but... he still wanted to leave a message all the same. ]
[Ah, it's Oz! Someone Vanitas has taken rather a liking to, all things considered. So he's more than happy to reply the moment he gets the message, having gotten the hang of the phones shortly after arriving.]
Of course. What can I do for you? Is everything alright?
[Flirting right out of the gate? You better believe it! Still, it doesn't take him long to arrive in a sweep of his cloak and flick of his tail. He only knocks out of politeness; otherwise he would have simply let himself in.]
[ Vincent has been wandering around for a good portion of the afternoon, now. First, throughout the city, until his earring picked up a reading; from there, it was trial and error, determining which direction would strengthen its signal. It’s ultimately lead him into the forest beyond the barriers.
Following his death, and subsequent revival, he’d simply tried to move forward with life, as it were. Finally, he could tend to business at the new café and living quarters. At first, it seemed reasonable that Vanitas wouldn’t be around, possibly finding it too awkward to be in the same vicinity since their falling out — however, as days passed, he caught word that no one had seen the young doctor for days.
Despite how things had ended between them, the love he holds for his imprinted partner, once lover, is still ever present; no matter where they stand, Vincent would not be able to rest until he knew that the man was alive and (for the most part) well.
So, hiking through the wilderness with an umbrella overhead, he’s just sighing heavily about it all. Being outdoors during the day is his least favorite thing, and second to that is physical exertion without gratification. It feels like Vanitas is doing this on purpose! Particularly because he’s ‘forgotten’ about the tracking capabilities of the earrings they share… or, in other words, he wants to be found.
Strangely, there’s specific location which he keeps being led back to. Any direction past it, and the power humming through the jewelry grows weaker. With a tick of the tongue, Vincent kicks around some of the leaves on the forest floor to see if the earring has been discarded… but finding nothing, he lowers his umbrella and slumps against a tree to rest. Damn it.
That is when he thinks to look up, hand blocking the setting sun as he squints against the light. ]
[In truth, Vanitas' disappearance wasn't the most well planned. It wasn't as though he packed a bag and hauled himself out into the wilderness with the intention of camping out and making everyone wonder about him. No, he'd simply allowed his feet to guide him while his mind wandered as well. It was only as the sun began to set and the chill settled into the night air that he finally realized how far out he'd come.
By then it was too late: he'd stumbled across an irate bear, and his only recourse was to shift into his cat form and take refuge up the nearest tree. Unfortunately, even after the bear had grown bored and wandered off, he found himself unable to shift back, and unable to safely climb down, either.
So it is that he's simply perched on a thick branch, shivering with his ears pinned back in dejection when Vincent happens to take refuge under that very same tree. Part of him had been hoping his former lover would indeed try to find him, but now that he's here, he finds himself feeling foolish, which in turn makes him less inclined to speak.
Yet he knows that saying nothing would only make things worse, so, eventually, finally:]
...you actually came. [He sounds both grateful and disbelieving all at once.]
[Maybe Vanitas is doing something, maybe he's just sitting down on the bed. Regardless, he soon will find himself with arms wrapped around his middle as Aether hugs him from behind, a playful smile painted on his lips.]
So I heard you can turn into a cat...
[Amused, the traveler pulls his lover only closer to himself.]
[Contentedly going over the menu they've been planning for the cafe, Vanitas doesn't expect the sudden snuggling from Aether, though he's not at all opposed to it. He doesn't see any reason to stop, though he does tilt his head to indicate he's listening.]
Hmm...? Ah, yeah, that's true...
[At least until he mentions that incident. Then he's dropping the papers into his lap and whirling around to stare bewilderingly at his lover.]
Huh?! How did you-- [Wait.] --that bastard...
[He may be turning red at the fact Aether's found out.]
As I was looking for an appropriate gift, I was met with dread as I realized I do not know what it is you may enjoy. I do, however, know what it is you need. In lieu of a gift you will enjoy, I hope this is a gift that will help you improve and become a better person.
Merry Christmas! Ereshkigal, Goddess of Death and Queen of Kûr
[Having most certainly not expected anything from Ereshkigal for the holidays, Vanitas looks at his wrapped present with no small amount of trepidation, wondering what the laws are on munitions. It could very well be something explosive...
Thankfully it proves to be no such thing, and is instead a book. While he likes books, he's a liiiiittle unsure about this one. It seems so hoity-toity and pompous. Fitting in a way, he supposes. All the same... He takes the accursed thing with him to the nearest chair and begins reading. Never let it be said he isn't one to make an effort.
The only trouble is that by about the twentieth page, his eyes are starting to droop. By the fortieth, he's out cold, slumped on teh table and snoring away. Maybe next time...]
[Some time passes after all those messy events take place. Vanitas' confrontation with Xiao and it's fallout linger in Aether's mind no matter how much he tries to forget about it. Maybe it just can't be helped, considering the conversation he had with Vincent later. So many people ended up upset from this one event.
Aether hesitates before crossing the mirror and ending up in the bedroom that Vanitas and Vincent share. By chance Vanitas is there and Aether approaches him without word, wrapping his arms around his middle and pressing his form to the other's back. A silent hello... but there is something else in it. A kind of sadness that he was attempting to keep deep down in his heart, but it's too big now.]
Hey, I thought... we could talk. About things.
[It helps that they don't have to look at one another. Or at least that's what Aether thinks.]
[For his part, Vanitas merely sticks to staying in bed, as he's been doing longer and longer as his spectral soul takes over and pushes him steadily toward an inevitable demise. That and the weight of his actions have been keeping him down emotionally and physically the past day or so. For once, he feels guilt over his actions. For hurting those he's gradually come to care about.
While he doesn't say anything either from Aether making his way into their room and over to him, he does cover one of those warm hands with his own icy one, which is now almost like the arctic itself. He allows himself to lean gently back against Aether, their bodies propping one another up. He doesn't need words or an expression to tell the traveler is down.]
Mmm... Alright. That's probably a good idea. What did you want to discuss?
[It is good, because already he feels enough like shit after having disappointed, betrayed, and hurt Aether.]
[It's just midnight, so technically it is now Vanitas's birthday. Noé has his present wrapped and ready in hand as he knocks on the door to check if Vanitas is up. He figures if not, he could always check later. He's just excited. Even if he is sure Vincent also probably has plans to give Vanitas something and spend at least some of the day together. He fidgets, holding the small box with the bracelet inside. He figures that the other might be awake, given how often the both of them end up doing cases back home later in the evening and all.]
[There's no worry that he'll be spending some of the time together with Noé for his birthday. He's too precious to him to completely keep him out of the loop. There's actually a surprising number of folks he has plans to see today, so it's somewhat of a shock that chief among them, Noé, comes to find him first thing once the clock strikes midnight. Thankfully he's alone at the time, merely sitting in bed reading a history book about this world, scouring its pages in search of any clues. So he has no problem marking his page and setting it aside when Noé knocks and calls out to him.]
Hmm? Yeah, I'm still awake. What's up? Come on in.
[Today is a very important day. Aether has been waiting for it impatiently, as he has a special gift for his dear lover. There's a huge grin on his face as he makes his way towards Vanitas, hugging the other from behind and pulling him close.]
Happy birthday!
[He nuzzles against his lover like an affectionate cat.]
[Despite being rather apprehensive about today, it's impossible to not feel some sense of happy giddiness when presented with Aether's warm hug and nuzzling. Still, he turns enough to brush a hand along his lover's cheek, leaning in to kiss him lightly.]
Heh, thanks... Another year survived, I guess.
[And what a ride it's been... Especially since arriving in Karteria.]
✉ SENDING OUR THANKS AND WELL WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR
► inside the red envelope rests an assortment of pristine seashells, sand dollars, and sea glass; also accompanied by other odd little curiosities—which are mostly old coins and strange mechanical parts.
► a second package also includes small samplings of fresh loose-leaf tea from the augmented-run farm, measured out and stored in a handful of vintage tea tins.
[At first, Vanitas is utterly baffled by the arrival of his gift. Especially the various sea trinkets and mechanical hoohahs. Yet he still finds it charming all the same, especially once he gets to the tea, an item he always appreciates. It's the Frenchman in him, you know.
Altogether, the gift brings a sense of warmth to his cheeks, and he finds himself stomping a foot in embarrassment at the note.]
Who's a kid?! That guy, why I oughta...
[Funnily enough, in the mail later that week, both Wriothesley and Neuvillette will find vouchers for free snacks at the new Augmented-run cafe, Down the Rabbit Hole. HMM. Strange, that.]
[ Steps reverberating across the emptiness of the cafe's dance floor, Vincent pauses to stand in front of the piano. It may stir complex feelings within him, but they're not entirely bad. Bare fingertips brush along its fallboard, lacquered surface pleasantly cool to the touch.
A silent sigh, as he slides into place on the bench. It's almost with a touch of hesitance that he folds back the cover, hands taking time to find their place over the keys.
For a moment, he simply closes his eyes, relishing in the silence. It would seem that everyone has already gone upstairs to settle in for the evening. Likely a touch worse for wear, having been down a staff member, and without notice. Vince had been doing them a favor, though, not returning to his shift. Even now, the scent of liquor lingers under his cologne, the scent of sea air on his hair.
As he begins to play, his annoyances slowly begin to melt away; what remains is bittersweet. The melody is one which was very meaningful to his younger brother. Not played nearly as masterfully, but... he had promised Leo that he would practice. ]
[From in the kitchen where Vanitas is finishing cleaning up, he hears neither the footsteps nor sigh from his lover. All he knows is Vincent had disappeared some time ago along with Verso, and frankly it's a little worrying. He had been hoping that bringing them together in a professional setting might go some ways to curbing their animosity by having Verso be helpful and earning them money, but... maybe not.
So he startles when the piano begins playing, fur standing on end and ears swiveling towards the sound. Hesitantly, he sets down the dish he was drying and pads out into the main room, peeking around the corner first just to confirm who it is.
And that person isn't who he expects.
His eyes widen at the sight of the blond hair, horns and wings seated before the instrument, yet like a siren calling to a sailor, he finds himself drifting closer, tail swaying in time with the tune. It's pleasant, yet somehow melancholy... Coming up alongside the piano, he rests a hand on it and waits for Vincent to finish before speaking up, tone one of impressed surprise.]
[This makes... three times his natural soul has taken over and left him watching. The first two, he understood. This one, less so. He just... slipped away. Fell into its instincts. Shifted in the middle of the street. Another set of clothes ruined. His reason for never wearing his expedition gear validated, quite apart from having grown too large for it.
The other difference between those times and this one is the way his hand grabs for his syntrofos as he wakes.]
Where are you?
[Verso is in a hospital gown, the background a Patho-Gen medical centre. Someone has — for safety, no doubt — attached what appear to be lime green styrofoam balls to the sharp points of his horns. His eyes are wild, his goat pupils slits.
He knows Vanitas is well, can feel it through their bond, but being without him — even in his half-conscious state — for weeks, it's left Verso desperate.
Vanitas might even get a mental overlap of his thoughts with the abrupt change from being out of control to being in control. Need you, haven't left, won't ever, need you.]
[Verso hasn't left, that much Vanitas is assured of. He can feel the other man through their connection, even if it's distorted and communication is impossible. So Vanitas simply does as he can only do: stays waiting in Verso's room, tidies up again and again and again, until every surface is gleaming and pristine.
Except for the bed, of course, where he finds himself resting anytime he needs a break from the hustle and bustle of the cafe. Upon hearing his syntrofos go off, he snatches it up in clawed hands, heart leaping into his throat when he sees who it is. Finally.]
Your place. What-- What happened?
[He can feel the desperation through their connection, and is hit by the rush of thoughts both needy and reassuring. It makes him shudder, his own appearance slightly disheveled from sleeping so much as a means of coping.]
Do you need me to come get you?
[Even as he says that, he's swinging his legs off the bed and grabbing Verso's clothes, shoving them into a bag before fleeing for the door, letting it slam in place behind him as he heads for Patho-Gen's headquarters. He hates it there, but this is even more important. Something he has to do.]
[After that little hijacking of Aether's texting with Jiaoqiu, the traveler quickly finds his way into the shared bedroom, eyes too happy when he spots his lover, arms slipping around Vanitas' shoulders as a cocky smile plays on the blonde's lips.]
[For all Vanitas' bluster and bravado, he seems surprisingly pouty over having his little plot go awry. Maybe he actually likes playing the hero sometimes...? Or it's possible he simply feels bad for having (potentially) hurt Aether's feelings.
Either way, he rests a hand upon the arms encircling him, holding his lover in place.]
Just so long as you're not hurt.
[Last thing he wants is to make Aether feel unwanted.]

Ah, so you are still awake.

Video, un: verso

I hope you don't mind that your plan backfired.
[He doesn't hide amusement from his voice.]
Because I definitely don't mind.
all the cute cuddles
Either way, he rests a hand upon the arms encircling him, holding his lover in place.]
Just so long as you're not hurt.
[Last thing he wants is to make Aether feel unwanted.]
